MUSIC TECH TITANS, TRAILBLAZERS, SOCIETY CHANGERS:

LOS ANGELES WOMEN IN MUSIC PRESIDENT HONORED BY PROJECT MUSZED

AT ANNUAL AWARDS BRUNCH BENEFITING YOUTH IN NEED

LOS ANGELES – April 21, 2011 – Los Angeles Women in Music (LAWiM) President Leanne Summers will receive the Illumination Award at the upcoming Project MuszEd (PM) “Making a Notable Difference” Awards. Summers and the other guests of honor will be recognized as trendsetters and innovators in music and music technology on Sunday, May 15, 2011. Festivities will rock n roll from 1:00pm-4:30pm at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens, 570 West Avenue 26, Los Angeles, CA 90065.

“We are extremely grateful to our esteemed honorees, who we admire not only for their impressive and dynamic professional accomplishments, but also for their sense of social responsibility and commitment to making a notable difference in the lives of others,” noted Project MuszEd Founder, Charyn Harris. “With their support, we know we will be able to make a greater positive impact and by serving more youth and families in need.”

Summers, a summa cum laude graduate of Berklee College of Music and president of LAWiM, will be honored for her longstanding dedication to nurturing young talent and the LAWiM Young Talent Night program, which launched in 2008. Young Talent Night (YTN) is a regular monthly series presented by LAWiM showcasing young performers. The show provides an opportunity for kids to perform in an intimate, eclectic setting for a small audience of family and friends. Donations and a percentage of the show proceeds fund LAWiM’s “Musical Gifts & Scholarship Program” for kids in need. LAWiM regularly "gifts" kids and organizations with musical instruments and accessories, supplies and scholarships/monies to help further music education and give rise to social and civic issues in the community. Gift presentations are made at the end of every YTN show.

Launched in 2004, PM has provided music instruction and services for youth in need, including those with chronic illnesses and in the foster care system.  The organization has been recognized as a trendsetter for providing unique opportunities in instructional methods, performance, and for continued support at the higher education level.  PM students have gained a reputation for rocking stages around Los Angeles, having opened for The Black Eyed Peas, All Time Low, and Amber Pacific. Students have also performed with celebrated artists such as violinist/conductor Andre Rieu, The Isley Brothers, Ozomatli, Leon Ware and others. They have also received full scholarships to attend Berklee College of Music and other impressive music programs nationwide. These youth are now reaching for heights they never thought they could achieve thanks to this program.  “ We are always thrilled when parents let us know how much this program means to them and how they see the difference  in their child’s confidence and academic growth” mentioned Harris.

The 2011 honorees are:

Leanne Summers, President, Los Angeles Women in Music, Illumination Award Recipient

Tish Ciravolo, Founder/President, Daisy Rock Guitars, Illumination Award Recipient

Ge Wang & Jeff Smith, Co-Founders, SonicMule (Smule), Innovation Award Recipient

The event’s aim is to increase funding for current Project MuszEd programming and to expand outreach to youth served by the organization.
