Julie Minasian is a pianist, singer, and songwriter. Loving music from a very early age, her parents nurtured and ‘developed her ear’, her musical instinct and her performance ability. Her talent on the piano was recognized when she won the Springfield Youth Symphony auditions and performed a concerto with them. She nearly pursued a career as a concert pianist as her depth of musical expression and technique captivated many audiences. Julie absolutely loves playing the piano and takes after her mother, who was her first teacher.
When Julie started singing in her teens (by imitating and making fun of opera singers while she was living at home), her parents thought she sounded very good and quickly signed her up for voice lessons. Singing gave her a wonderful way to express herself that brought her a profound sense of joy, and after years of study with many teachers, Julie’s voice has become very flexible. She sings in a variety of styles including musical theater, opera, classical, choral, pop, folk and country. She recently had the honor of singing on a vocal demo intended for noted folk singer, Joan Baez. Early on Julie was inspired by movies and film music and particularly loved the works of John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith. In March 2011, she was fortunate to be able to sing choral film music by Jerry Goldsmith with the American Youth Symphony conducted by the very talented film composer David Newman. She has performed in numerous choirs and musical and opera ensembles, including the New York Choral Artists. She performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall, and also with members of the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall for Japan’s earthquake and tsunami relief. Composing music for the piano came out of Julie’s daily multi-hour practice of classical music. When she made a mistake that she actually thought sounded good, she would improvise and eventually come up with her own original music. Several songs on her CD, “This is the Love I Have”, were originally written as piano instrumentals. During her time in New York, Julie worked as an assistant in the A&R Department of EMI Classics/Angel Records. She was also awarded a grant from the “Meet the Composer Fund” to write and perform a solo concert, and the Springfield Ballet Company choreographed a dance to one of her piano instrumentals. Noticed by Bruce Lundvall, President/CEO of Blue Note Records, he encouraged her to get her music published and to continue to pursue her music career. So, she studied the art of songwriting with the wonderful songwriter Lorraine Ferro, recorded a portion of her record with Daniel Wise, and performed in forums such as the Songwriter’s Circle at the legendary Bitter End night club.
Julie moved to Los Angeles and finished her CD, “This is the Love I Have” with recording engineer and producer Randall Michael Tobin. She has also furthered her study of songwriting with the fantastic and prolific songwriter Harriet Schock. She has performed on the LAWiM stage several times and her songs have been chosen to play in rotation on Women of Substance Radio. She is writing music for her next CD planned for release in Fall 2011.
Julie is very active at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood as a solosit and soprano for the Cathedral Choir, piano accompanist for the children’s Carol Choir (ages 9-12), and playing for the Cathedral Bell Choir. She considers these performances some of the most rewarding for her! An excellent team player and vocal sight reader, she sings backup vocals for other artists, performs with other church choirs and bell choirs in the L.A. area, and has been hired for recording sessions.

“Love Theme for a Movie” appears on Los Angeles Women in Music’s “Best of the Best" 2008-2009 Compilation CD.
