Music Libraries... Music Placement... Music Publishing...

This workshop deals with current and future opportunities to earn money with your original songs and compositions.

Ever since the days when sheet music first burst forth from the printing press and was delivered directly into the hands of eager musicians, the business of music publishing has evolved with each technological advance in the entertainment/communication fields. From piano rolls to vinyl records to MTV to digital downloads, the manner in which composers enter the market and collect revenue from it has undergone profound changes. Particularly in the last decade, with the ease of global outreach but corresponding pervasive piracy, music publishers have sought to remain as viable and valuable participants in the ever changing business of music.

This panel will explore what remains of the old music publishing model, what the current trends are--with a particular focus on music libraries--and what music publishing is likely to become. More importantly, we will focus on how you, the songwriter/composer, can adopt strategies to take advantage of the new modalities emerging from the music publishing field. From how to get music placements to how to collect money from such placement, this panel is certain to get your creative juices flowing!

PLUS... SAVE THE DATE for Part 2 of this topic... Wednesday, November 2nd... CONTRACT Do's and Don't's will be discussed.

ANDREA BRAUER has been in the music business for 30 years and has practiced entertainment law for 20 of these. A large part of her practice is devoted to independent music business ventures and she currently represents numerous records labels, publishers, production companies and managers as well as independent artists. Throughout her career, Andrea has taken a special interest in emerging talent, particularly composers and songwriters. To that end, she has been involved, almost from their inception, with the development and continuing evolution of music libraries as an adjunct and alternative to traditional music publishing. To this day, she is active in exploring the many ways in which new technology contributes to and enhances this important distribution medium.

The company provides an extensive collection of songs in a variety of musical genres from top 40 pop to quirky instrumentals with odd time signatures. Moonshine Licensing has developed a sophisticated online search database where musicians can submit material, producers can locate and license material, and Moonshine can collect/distribute income completely automated via the internet. This streamlined process makes it much quicker and cheaper to get music into the hands of music supervisors, and thus gives Moonshine a competitive edge. Major placements include Bud Light and Kraft.
