A Bridge Over Troubled Waters: How To Navigate the Copyright Office ONLINE REGISTRATION and more...

This workshop deals with copyright law basics and registration issues and will walk you through an actual ONLINE REGISTRATION of a song!

If you have struggled with the unfriendly skies and the murky depths of ECO - the U.S. Copyright Office Online Registration site – come listen and watch a music attorney/copyright law professor perform an actual, live, online registration of a song.  No blood will be shed!  No animals will be injured!  The process will be de-mystified and your questions and issues will be answered.

Learn the application process, the details you need to have ready to respond to the online prompts, the proper digital format to submit your songs, how to answer questions regarding “author” and “claimant,” “publication,” “co-authors” and “work for hire.”  In addition... Clear up your confusion over copyright v. publishing, compulsory v. mechanical licenses, administration v. publishing, “statutory rate,” issues regarding co-writers, the duration of copyright for your early songs and your newer works, when is an arrangement copyrightable, and work for hire pitfalls.

You will also hear vital and current information regarding the RECAPTURE of songs that you may have assigned or transferred (before you knew better or had a choice).

One lucky attendee will have their song registered online during the workshop for FREE - compliments of LAWiM! For purposes of this demonstration and to participate in the drawing you MUST follow these submission guidelines:
1. Bring an mp3 of your song OR PDF of the sheet music/lyrics for application documentation - in other words... if you need it for the paper version - you need it for the electronic version!
2. Documentation of the work should be on a flash/thumb drive (preferred) OR data CD
3. The work to be registered can be one or more compositions (music & lyrics) - but, they must ALL be composed by the SAME writer or writers. Authorship MUST be exactly the same for each song.
4. You must know the author(s) birthdates, year of completion of the work, whether or not it has been "published" to the public (and when), and who is the "claimant" (owner).
